There are multiple ways to make a cup of coffee, and one of our favorite ways to make coffee is the pour-over methods. Two of our favorite pour-over coffee makers are the V60 Pour over and the Chemex pour-over machine.
Through this article, I will tell the similarities, differences, and things to consider when buying a Chemex and V60, and will tell you which one you should buy! Let’s get into the Chemex vs hario!

Chemex Review
Chemex is one of the most prolific and well-known pour-over coffee makers on the market today. Also, it is one of the best and does not disappoint. ALL Chemex coffee makers are made of high-quality borosilicate glass, which makes it so the glass will not absorb any odors or chemical residues.
The Chemex pour-over coffee maker is simple and so easy to use. This coffee maker allows your coffee to be covered and refrigerated for reheating without losing any flavor. This is one of the things I love about my Chemex, as you can store the coffee because lots of times, I end up chucking my coffee away, which is a complete waste.
Like all good things, the flavor takes time. Chemex is able to deliver a full flavor and allows you to take your own personal taste and approach to coffee come through. This coffee maker is one of my favorite coffee makers on the market today and will not disappoint!
Hairo v60 Pour Over
Now, we have a direct rival to the Chemex, the Hario V60 coffee maker. This is also one of the best pour-over coffee makers on the market today. This coffee maker really does have everything you need for any professional; pour over a cup of coffee at home or even at work!
The quality of this coffee maker is just out of this world. The heatproof borosilicate glass server with its BPA-free handle is just some of the amazing features that this coffee maker has. Also, the V60 is able to make 1-4 cups of coffee in 1 brew! Much more than the competition is able to brew.
Overall, this is a cheap and effective coffee maker that will allow you to brew some of the best coffee and will provide you with top-quality coffee every time. If you’re looking for a great pour-over coffee maker, this is the machine for you!
Buyers Guide: What Should You Choose, Chemex, Or V60?
So, now let’s get into the nitty-gritty; what should you choose. First of all, you have to actually know what these products are before you can decide.
What is a Chemex?
The Chemex coffee maker is a glass vessel that is created in the shape of an hourglass. It is a coffee maker that was designed in 1941 by Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. The Chemex is a pour-over coffee maker that is able to brew coffee.
What is a Hairo V60?
The Hario V60 is very similar to a Chemex in that they are both pour-over coffee makers. Hairo is a Japanese coffee company that makes lab equipment and home kitchen devices.
Now, let’s get into some factors you have to look into with any pour-over coffee makers!

Buyers Guide: V60 vs Chemex
Price
Whether you like it or not, the price is a big factor when it comes to any coffee maker on the market today. There is a difference of around $20 between these two coffee makers, and I will get into why later down in the article. Chemex is more expensive than the Hario V60 by around the $20 dollar mark, and this a big difference between the two coffee makers.
So if you’re looking for a bargain, definitely go for the Hario V60 as it is much cheaper than the Chemex.
Design
When you purchase a coffee maker, one of the most important things to think about is whether or not it is going to look good in your kitchen. You don’t want to spend money on a coffee machine that is going to stick out like a sore thumb in your kitchen.
Let’s start with the materials of the coffee makers. First of all, the V60 comes in a variety of options; these include ceramic, plastic, metal, and glass. This is really good as you can pick the perfect material to come into your kitchen. The V60 also can come in a variety of sizes.
The Chemex, unfortunately, comes in only glass. You can customize the machine a little, though; you are able to change the coffee maker to take the wood collar off. The Chemex also comes in a variety of sizes.
Now, the design is all up to you, so you do have to form your own opinion on the look of each of these coffee makers and decide what one looks better for you. But, I will say that the design of Chemex is heavily praised around the world and is even placed in New York City’s Museum of Modern Art. So, for this factor, I will have to go for Chemex as it does look better in my eyes, but maybe for you, the V60 looks better, it really is all up to opinion.
Brew Time
We all want a coffee maker that is quick and is able to brew coffee quickly and efficiently. Luckily, you are able to brew coffee quite quickly with these two coffee makers. The brew time for the V60 is around 3-4 minutes, and you can change that easily. The Chemex is a little bit longer, taking on average around 7 minutes to brew coffee.
Overall, if you are looking for a quicker brew, then go for the V60 as it brews much faster than the Chemex.
Taste
This is the factor to really look out for. You want a brew that is going to taste nice and provide you with a high-quality coffee at any time. The Chemex brew is one of the best coffee I have ever tasted. The Chemex coffee is sweet and really does bring out the floral notes in a coffee. But it does depend on the filter that you use for your coffee. The thicker filter creates a more bitter and blacker coffee taste. But, Chemex does provide a high-quality tasting coffee.
The V60 also does provide some tasty coffee, and with the V60, you are able to customize your coffee more than ever before. The V60 is able to brew coffee that is bright and sweet, with fruity flavors mixed in between. But, a little mistake can make your brew in the V60 taste horrible, as I have learned the hard way.
Overall, if you’re looking for the best tasting coffee every time, you should purchase the Chemex. But the taste is subjective, so you do have to decide for yourself with this factor.
What is the difference between v60 and Chemex?
There really isn’t much difference between the two other than the different tasting coffee, and one major difference between the two is the size; Chemex is designed for a larger coarse grind, and the V60 is meant for a smaller grind.

Is Chemex better than pour over?
Well, this is a common question we actually see on the web, and we can confirm, the Chemex is no different than a Pour-over; rather, a pour-over coffee machine is actually what a Chemex coffee maker is!
Can you use v60 filters in a Chemex?
We definitely do not recommend this, as the filters are very different and are made for different designs. We definitely recommended you stick to the average filters for each coffee maker.
So what should you buy?
Here we go, the verdict of this article, what coffee maker should you buy, the V60 vs. Chemex? Well, it was no easy task. But I compared all the factors and my personal experiences with the two coffee machines, and I believe that the V60 does come out on top. The reasoning behind this is that the V60 is cheaper, brews faster and just overall was a more reliable coffee maker than the Chemex. The Chemex did brew better coffee, but it wasn’t able to beat the V60 in the other areas.
